We have been exploring the issue of cyberbullying for quite some time and we are doing something about it! We are creating proposals with solutions and plan to present them to the leaders in our district! The steps we are taking to create our proposals are below. Our goal is to have steps 1-4 complete by the Monday we return from spring break.
All the documents, videos, and materials can be found in Google Classroom under the Cyberbullying Proposal topic in Classwork.
Dear 2017-2018 6th and 7th grade students,
As we close out the year, I want to make sure I tell my you this how much I admire and will miss you all. You have been a WONDERFUL group of thinkers, readers, and writers and I have absolutely loved watching you grow. In school, you have a choice. You can actively resist the learning opportunities set before you and waste the time you have been given to try things, to learn and to grow . You can just do the bare minimum--what is expected of you--and achieve a level of surface learning. Or you can give yourself over to the rich, deep learning that is available to you and really thrive. Many of you showed that were willing to move beyond the typical middle-school-stance of choosing active resistance or surface learning and decided to dive into truly deep learning. And this was a beautiful thing to watch. I did my job of showing up with those opportunities, but you? You are the ones who made the choices. You chose to push yourselves to read widely, voraciously, and omnivorously. And I know you will keep doing so over the summer (hint-hint). You decided to take creative risks in your writing and thus produced some pieces that the world needs to read. Seriously--let's talk about getting published. You accepted the challenge to learn to think and look more deeply at the world and were able to move beyond the surface and become aware that there just might be something deeper at work in a great many people and things. Including yourselves. For these things, and so many more, I am very, very proud of you. Yes, I was your teacher, but you were also mine. I have learned a great deal from you and have been so inspired and encouraged by your desire to be risk-takers and commit yourselves to the important work we have been doing. Here's my hope for you as you embark on your summer and move into your next grade. May you-- Be kind. Have integrity. Grow in your grit. Have courage. Find poetry in unexpected places. See beyond the level one and look for the deeper meaning. Read and write beautiful things (everyday if possible). Do what you can to change the world. And here is one last poem to send you on your way (you know I couldn't resist). "You Reading This, Be Ready" by William Stafford Starting here, what do you want to remember? How sunlight creeps along a shining floor? What scent of old wood hovers, what softened sound from outside fills the air? Will you ever bring a better gift for the world than the breathing respect that you carry wherever you go right now? Are you waiting for time to show you some better thoughts? When you turn around, starting here, lift this new glimpse that you found; carry into evening all that you want from this day. This interval you spent reading or hearing this, keep it for life--- What can anyone give you greater than now, starting here, right in this room, when you turn around? Next year's students have some giant shoes to fill. Love, Mrs. Briseño 6th grade parents, families, and guardians: Please join us as we show off our incredible poetry collections! Feel free to bring a snack and/or drink to share!
